is hatred that leads to violence.
These recent shootings in Orlando leave me saddened and confused. This same time last year there was another shooting in Charleston, South Carolina when a young man that had hatred for the black community and went and shot 9 people dead in a church, including the pastor. When I heard about this shooting on the radio I was sobbing in my car and feeling very heavy-hearted. That night I bought 9 cards for the victims’ families. I brought the store-bought cards home for my husband to sign. Then I thought, what if the whole community could sign them? Within a weeks time, I had compiled several signatures in each card, flowers, photographs, handmade jewelry and artwork to add to the box. I added “People Spread Love” in the return address and mailed it.
I never heard back, but I didn’t need to. I needed to reach out to those that were hurting even in just a seemingly small way. Our community came together when things were difficult and because humankind understands suffering, we sympathize and want to show that we care.
This year we put together a package much larger with the WHOLE community putting their love into the victim’s families in Orlando. We can only hope a small token of love can help heal them even for just an instant.
What we can ALL use..
is love that leads to more love.
What People Spread Love is set out to do is to reach out to strangers across the country and across the world and to be there for one another. Not only when things look so very grim, but when things are just okay and a boost is all they may need to get through to the next day.
